Utah draws scrutiny with pilot allowing AI to renew some psychiatric prescriptions
Utah will start a one-year pilot this month in which an AI system renews prescriptions for some psychiatric drugs without a doctor visit. The program is limited to 15 low-risk maintenance medicines and stable patients with existing prescriptions, excluding recent medication changes and recent psychiatric hospitalisations. Users must verify identity and prescriptions, and clinicians review out-of-scope cases. Some psychiatrists warned a chatbot could miss clinical nuances.
