Apple to expand use of Presto to check returned iPhones without opening boxes

Apple is pushing a plan to inspect iPhones returned in sealed condition without opening the packaging. It is considering using its existing Presto iOS update equipment to diagnose the condition of returned devices. Store staff currently must open boxes before issuing refunds to confirm devices work and to deter theft or parts swapping. Apple is seeking to reduce time and costs by expanding the use of existing equipment, but has not disclosed timing or scope.
