Database firms push data tech to cut token waste by AI agents
As AI companies shift from flat-rate plans to usage-based billing, operating costs for AI agents are rising sharply. Database companies are pushing infrastructure solutions designed to reduce token consumption, The Register reported. Vector database firm Pinecone launched Nexus, a knowledge engine that pre-arranges data structure and context. TigerData, developer of TimescaleDB, introduced Ghost, a database platform for AI agents billed by compute time rather than database count.

AWS launches knowledge graph services for AI agents, joins context intelligence race
Amazon Web Services has announced three new services positioned as a context intelligence stack for AI agents. The core is AWS Context, which automatically builds knowledge graphs from existing data and learns agent usage patterns to improve itself. It combines semantic search and graph-level reasoning to identify relationships between tables, column meaning and source reliability, and deliver needed information when agents run tasks. Queries can be tracked by identity.

Pinecone that helped popularise RAG now bets on an alternative
Pinecone, one of the companies that helped pioneer the vector database market supporting retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), is sending a different message around AI agents. The News Stack reported that Pinecone has provided 800,000 developers with chunking, embedding and retrieval methods for RAG over the past four years and unveiled its agent knowledge engine, Nexus, in early May. Pinecone argues RAG is unstable, slow and costly, but faces questions over industry adoption of its KnowQL.
