PJM to limit power supply to data centres using 50 MW or more
PJM Interconnection, the largest U.S. power grid operator, will cut electricity supply to large data centres and other big power users when power is scarce. The step followed a capacity auction aimed at adding new generation that fell short of its target. The restrictions will apply from June 2027 to data centres using 50 megawatts or more. The programme will operate like a demand response scheme and pay compensation to affected customers.

U.S. data centres to use 20 percent of power generation by 2035, BNEF sees fourfold rise
U.S. data centre electricity use is expected to quadruple by 2035 and account for 20 percent of total power generation, as surging AI computing demand accelerates expansion faster than grids can keep up. BloombergNEF sees U.S. data centre capacity reaching about 200 gigawatts within 10 years, with nearly half used for AI training and inference. Grid constraints are emerging as a key variable in AI infrastructure competition, with pressure rising in regions such as PJM and Texas.

U.S. cost debate grows over whether data centre boom will raise household electricity bills
As data centres rapidly expand on the back of the AI boom, concerns are growing in the United States that the cost of generation, transmission and substation upgrades could be passed on to household electricity bills. Analysts disagree on whether data centres raise residential rates, with some arguing they increase procurement costs and others citing research suggesting average retail prices can fall as fixed costs are spread across greater usage. The debate centres on cost-allocation rules and regulatory design.
