Will AI replace the OS as the next generation smartphone UI?
AI-equipped smartphones have been on the market for some time, but many assessments say few consumers buy phones because of AI. Google continues to push AI, releasing the Pixel 11 with Gemini-based services such as grocery ordering, ride hailing and restaurant reservations. The New York Times reported Google sees AI ultimately replacing the operating system in importance. Its reviewer found some tools impressive but said using Gemini to control apps was cumbersome.

Google adds app integrations to AI Mode, supports Instacart, Canva, YouTube
Google has added a feature in AI Mode that lets users connect some external apps and continue tasks directly. TechCrunch reported the feature will be applied first to U.S. users, and the supported apps at launch are Instacart, Canva and YouTube. The update expands AI Mode beyond conversational search to handling tasks in frequently used apps. Google plans to increase supported apps through partnerships.

Google rounds up key I/O 2026 announcements, spotlight on Gemini Spark and smart glasses
Google unveiled new AI features and pricing plans at I/O 2026, focusing on search, a digital assistant and smart glasses. It said it will expand an intelligent AI search box globally, allowing inputs beyond text such as images, video files and entire Chrome tabs, with follow-up queries handled in an AI mode based on Gemini 3.5 Flash. Google also introduced Gemini Spark and debuted two Android XR smart glasses.
