Leaving VMware could mean more complex and costlier infrastructure
Some companies are considering breaking with VMware after Broadcom shifted licensing to a subscription model, raising costs, but switching core software is not easy and could bring side effects. Gartner research vice president Paul Delory warned companies that leave may end up with more complex and less efficient infrastructure. He said there is no technical reason to choose rival hypervisors and no one-to-one replacement for VMware Cloud Foundation.

IREN to acquire open-source cloud infrastructure firm Mirantis
Neo-cloud company IREN will acquire open-source cloud infrastructure specialist Mirantis, The Register reported on Thursday. Mirantis is known for OpenStack distributions, hyperconverged appliances and Kubernetes tools, and launched an AI infrastructure deployment automation platform, k0rdent AI, in 2025. Mirantis will continue as an independent business after the deal and support IREN cloud deployments. IREN began as Iris Energy in 2018, moved into generative AI infrastructure in 2023 and now runs six data centres.

Yahoo Japan-Line merger firm LY Corporation steps up integration with new Flava cloud
LY Corporation, formed through the merger of Yahoo Japan and Line, has begun a large-scale infrastructure integration to replace heavily customised OpenStack clouds with a new unified cloud called Flava, The Register reported on April 7. The company’s services have about 300 million monthly users. Flava will run on a single OpenStack cluster with more than 500 hosts and over 9,000 VMs. The firm aims to minimise custom patches and automate much of failure handling.
