Why AWS overhauled its OpenSearch Serverless architecture
AWS has overhauled the architecture of OpenSearch Serverless, a managed search and vector engine, to account for the spread of AI agents. Tia White, AWS head of OpenSearch, said 97 percent of OpenSearch Serverless was rebuilt from scratch because the previous serverless architecture could not handle irregular AI agent usage patterns. AWS separated storage and compute, introduced a new in-house storage structure and said autoscaling is now 20 times faster, delivering up to 60 percent cost savings.

She said contributors, downloads and commits rose notably after the move, and urged weighing data sovereignty and business models when choosing platforms.
