Artemis II completes laser communications demonstration
The U.S. lunar mission Artemis II has demonstrated laser-based communications, showing data-transfer performance up to 100,000 times faster than Apollo 13, TechRadar reported. The optical system is aimed at handling large volumes of high-resolution images and telemetry expected from modern missions. Orion’s O2O system transmitted about 36 GB per hour, far above older radio links. NASA said weather sensitivity and ground-station requirements remain challenges.

Artemis II to build triple communications network: near space, deep space and laser
NASA\'s crewed lunar mission Artemis II will have the Orion spacecraft operate a next-generation communications system combining dual radio networks with laser optical links. The Near Space Network will handle links after launch until Orion enters a lunar transfer orbit, then the Deep Space Network will take over. NASA is also introducing the O2O laser system, developed with MIT Lincoln Laboratory, targeting speeds up to 260 Mbps to support voice and 4K video.
