Cost-effectiveness becomes a competitive edge as AI cost-cutting techniques evolve
Companies are stepping up efforts to use AI more cost-effectively as usage grows and expenses weigh. Some are cutting AI costs by mixing cheaper models with high-performance systems from OpenAI and Anthropic, or by using routing software that selects models automatically. Others set limits on employee usage or restrict access to expensive models. Firms are also refining prompts to reduce “thinking” time. Open-source models, including Chinese ones, are gaining share.

Microsoft expands GPT model supply to Chinese big tech, OpenAI workaround supply chain emerges
Microsoft is supplying GPT models to major Chinese technology companies through Azure, while OpenAI and Anthropic avoid direct entry into China. Chinese groups including ByteDance, Ant Group and Tencent use the service, as demand and Microsoft’s China AI revenue rise. The arrangement also raises concerns about model distillation and controls. Anthropic remains more conservative, while cost pressures are boosting interest in Chinese AI models in the United States.
