IBM develops dual-architecture Arm chip for IBM Z and LinuxONE
IBM is working with Arm to develop a dual-architecture processor for IBM Z mainframes and LinuxONE systems. The chip is designed to run z/OS and Arm-native Linux workloads simultaneously on the same core. The chip has not been named. It uses a unified architecture aimed at eliminating the need to split work between Arm and IBM cores. It is built on a 2-nanometre process and includes 11 5.7-gigahertz cores.

IBM shrinks z17 mainframe to lower barrier to AI infrastructure
IBM has unveiled a smaller z17 mainframe and a LinuxONE 5 server lineup targeting on-premise enterprise AI demand. The products include single-frame and rack-mounted z17 systems, plus LinuxONE Rockhopper 5 and LinuxONE 5 Express. IBM said the z17 now fits a standard 19-inch rack. It said the new systems support real-time AI inference, fraud detection and automated decision-making without moving data to the cloud, alongside updated software and security features.

The move aims to meet rising demand for AI and data-intensive workloads. The companies will work toward dual-architecture hardware development, combining the reliability, security and scalability of IBM Z and LinuxONE with Arm’s power-efficient computing and software ecosystem. The partnership will focus on virtualization, performance and efficiency, and shared technology layers across platforms.
