Kim Hyeong-cheol takes office as new NIA head, pledges to drive top-three AI push
The National Information Society Agency said Kim Hyeong-cheol has begun his term as its 16th president after an inauguration ceremony at its Daegu headquarters. Kim said he will develop NIA into a core think tank for a governmentwide AI transformation aimed at becoming one of the world’s top three AI powers. He also pledged to lead AI transition across public services, healthcare and defence, and to fulfil its role as an AI policy centre under the AI Basic Act.

Industry ministry to expand national strategic reference materials program
South Korea\'s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy\'s Korean Agency for Technology and Standards said on Jan. 30 it will announce new tasks for the 2026 national strategic reference materials development program. In its second year, the program expands support for new tasks by 50 percent from a year earlier. It will invest 4.8 billion won in 15 new tasks across semiconductors, displays, secondary batteries and biotech. Applications run from Jan. 30 to 6 p.m. on March 3.

MOTIE to overhaul 67 government certification schemes, abolish 23
South Korea\'s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said it will abolish 23 certification schemes and has prepared overhaul measures for 67 of 79 government certification schemes under review this year. The plan was reported to the ninth National Policy Coordination Meeting chaired by Prime Minister Kim Min-seok. The government is reviewing 246 schemes in a third cycle covering 2025 to 2027, with 79 to be reviewed in 2026, 84 in 2027 and 83 in 2028 as planned in stages.
