Senior scams exploit combined personal data, target family group chats
Online scams targeting older people in the United States are rising rapidly, prompting warnings about family impersonation and account takeovers using publicly available personal information. An Incogni analysis cited by 9to5Mac found about 72 percent of 2024 internet crimes reported to the FBI involving people aged 60 and older fell into categories where exposed personal data could enable crimes or worsen harm. Estimated losses were $4.2 billion, versus the FBI’s total of $4.885 billion.
