Next-generation transformer development steps up to ease data centre power crunch

As power demand surges with the expansion of AI data centres, solid-state transformers are drawing attention as a way to ease grid bottlenecks because they are smaller and offer better power control than conventional transformers. In the United States, delivery times for some large transformers have stretched to as long as 5 years. Researchers developed a 1 MW prototype and tested it on a 13,200-volt distribution line, while private funding is also increasing.
