Lawson to test stablecoin payments at convenience stores with JPYC from August
Japan\'s convenience store chain Lawson will introduce payments using yen-pegged stablecoin JPYC at stores from August. A pilot is set for early August at a Lawson store operated by telecoms company KDDI, using a smartphone wallet barcode scanned by a POS terminal. Lawson plans to check POS integration and payment time. KDDI has a capital and business tie-up with wallet firm HashPort, which supports the trial.

Japan payment processor Zentoushin bankruptcy sparks concern over payment gaps; some cite BTC, JPYC as alternatives
Concerns are rising in Japan over potential payment infrastructure gaps for some businesses after credit card payment processor Zentoushin went bankrupt. Businessman Takafumi Horie mentioned bitcoin and yen-linked stablecoin JPYC as possible alternatives in a YouTube video. Zentoushin was known for serving sectors often avoided by financial institutions and filed for bankruptcy with about 125.9 billion yen in liabilities. JPYC is also running payment trials, including vending machines in Kyoto.

Japan\'s KDDI to take 14.9% stake in Coincheck Group for $65 million
Japan\'s telecommunications company KDDI will invest $65 million to acquire a 14.9% stake in Coincheck Group. CoinDesk reported that KDDI agreed to buy 28.5 million newly issued shares at $2.28 each, with the deal expected to close in June. The companies also signed a business partnership involving customer referrals, revenue sharing and referral fees, aiming to broaden crypto access in Japan by combining KDDI channels with Coincheck services.
