Can a 40,000-won ultra-low-cost smartphone work? Manufacturers say costs are hard to bear
A global project to cut smartphone prices to about $40, or roughly 40,000 won, is gaining momentum, with GSMA launching a pilot programme for ultra-low-cost 4G devices. Major African mobile operators will take part across six countries, and GSMA expects 20 million new internet users if it succeeds. Analysts warn parts costs, rising memory prices and import tariffs could hinder production and sustainability without government and financial backing.
