Shares fall, losses widen: China\'s open-weight AI dilemma
Open-weight AI models promoted by Chinese developers are drawing technical attention but are facing worsening profitability, Business Insider reported. Unlike open-source software, wider use raises inference costs because each response requires chips, power and data centre resources. Z.ai posted $107 million in revenue and nearly $500 million in losses last year, while its shares have fallen more than 40 percent in the past month. MiniMax also reported losses and a sharp share drop. Moonshot AI paused new registrations after releasing Kimi K3 due to a lack of computing resources.
