[DigitalToday reporter Yoonseo Lee (이윤서)] Chinese AI startup Z.ai has unveiled GLM-Legal, an AI model specialised for legal work.
On Oct. 13 local time, online media outlet Gigazine reported that the model is designed not as a general-purpose system but for legal tasks where organising evidence and producing complete outputs matter, such as contract review and negotiation and drafting regulatory documents.
Z.ai sees workflows that combine specialised models operating under strict constraints, rather than a single general-purpose model, becoming the mainstream in the AI market. It chose legal work as a stress test for specialised models because tasks such as writing terms of service and negotiating contracts require systematically organising clear grounds to produce a final deliverable.
GLM-Legal is an additional training of GLM-5.3-Flash. The "harness" that determines how the model operates was also optimised for legal work.
A legal task benchmark comparison table released by the company includes GLM-Legal, GLM-5.3-Flash, Kimi K3, Claude Fable 5 and GPT-6 Astra. GLM-Legal posted results in some tests that exceeded Claude Fable 5 and GPT-6 Astra.
GLM-Legal can handle legal tasks while referencing large volumes of files. It can read a contract and propose terms that benefit the user, or generate proposals that reflect legal meaning during negotiations with a counterparty. It also supports drafting privacy policies that reflect regulatory differences by country.
Z.ai cited tasks such as drafting terms of service and negotiating contracts, and stressed that the ability to complete outputs based on legal grounds, rather than simple summarisation, is important. GLM-Legal was designed to link large-scale document search, logical organisation and drafting.
GLM-Legal is currently in beta testing. Z.ai plans to apply the model to its AI agent AutoClaw and is also accepting applications for API access.
The release shows the market focus shifting from competition in general-purpose AI to competition in industry-specific specialised models. In areas such as legal work, where document volumes are large and regulatory differences by country are significant, specialised training and optimisation of work structures are increasingly likely to determine performance gaps. With GLM-Legal, Z.ai has effectively moved to step up a specialised AI strategy targeting such demand.
