Japan digital securities to open to foreign investors as SBI, Daiwa eye 2027 trading
SBI Securities and Daiwa Securities are building a trading framework to allow overseas investors to invest in Japanese digital securities, with a possible launch as early as 2027. The initiative aims to expand a market largely limited to domestic residents. The firms have validated a direct trading base with Singapore with the fintech firm Boostry. They are also reviewing use of Circle’s dollar-backed stablecoin for settlement and considering a yen-based stablecoin later.

Japan\'s three megabanks plan to issue a jointly created stablecoin during fiscal 2026. CoinPost reported that Mitsubishi UFJ Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp and Mizuho Bank will soon reach a basic agreement and set up a council to flesh out operations. The plan assumes the banks obtain licences for electronic payment instrument transactions, with a trust bank acting as issuer trustee. The initiative is also tied to securities settlement tests using blockchain data.

Japan\'s SBI pushes bitcoin, XRP spot ETFs, eyes Tokyo Stock Exchange listing
Japan\'s financial firm SBI Holdings is pushing to launch exchange-traded funds holding bitcoin and XRP, aiming for a Tokyo Stock Exchange listing. It has outlined a “SBI Bitcoin/XRP ETF” in investor materials and also proposed a trust that allocates at least 51 percent to a physical gold ETF and up to 49 percent to crypto ETFs. The move comes as Japan revises rules to classify cryptocurrencies as financial products and tighten oversight.
