The report said vSphere Standard has seen little change for years and received little promotion after Broadcom bought VMware in 2023. VMware has focused on expanding its private cloud platform Cloud Foundation, while lower-cost products drew minimal attention and sales incentives pushed customers toward VCF.

Microsoft to stop selling licenses for Azure VMware Solution
Microsoft will phase out the current licensing model for Azure VMware Solution, The Register reported on Aug. 20. The move removes an option for companies to use VMware Cloud Foundation in the cloud without licensing it directly. Microsoft will stop selling new AVS environments that include VMware licenses from Oct. 31, 2026. Existing customers must switch to a bring-your-own-license model by Aug. 30, 2027.

Leaving VMware could mean more complex and costlier infrastructure
Some companies are considering breaking with VMware after Broadcom shifted licensing to a subscription model, raising costs, but switching core software is not easy and could bring side effects. Gartner research vice president Paul Delory warned companies that leave may end up with more complex and less efficient infrastructure. He said there is no technical reason to choose rival hypervisors and no one-to-one replacement for VMware Cloud Foundation.
