VMware, a unit of Broadcom, will soon unveil an updated version of its low-cost server virtualisation product vSphere Standard, The Register reported on Sept. 2 local time.

The report said vSphere Standard has seen no major changes for several years. It added that there has been little promotion since Broadcom acquired VMware in 2023.

VMware has focused over the past 3 years on expanding its private cloud platform Cloud Foundation (VCF). vSphere Standard and the low-cost vSphere Enterprise Plus line remain on the product list, but their descriptions on the website were limited to a few lines. VMware and its partners have either not provided quotes to renew subscriptions for low-cost products or offered quotes only for adopting VCF, The Register said.

It added that another small bundle sold by Broadcom, vSphere Foundation, was supplied in practice only as an exception when customers that had already adopted VCF needed a small product for some sites.

Many companies did not want to stop using vSphere Standard, but not a few had to look for alternatives because of the need to adopt VCF and the cost burden, The Register said.

Paul Turner (폴 터너), chief product officer for the VMware Cloud Foundation division, met The Register at the annual Explore conference. He acknowledged, "We have been overly focused on VCF," saying the company fixed an incentive structure in which the sales team steered customers toward VCF.
