OpenAI, Anthropic unveil new lower-cost AI models to counter open-weight rivals
OpenAI and Anthropic on Sept. 22 unveiled new AI models aimed at lowering costs for customers seeking to reduce AI spending and to counter cheaper open-weight models. OpenAI added GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna to its GPT-6 lineup, with API prices 50 percent below a GPT-5.6 promotion level. Anthropic announced Claude Opus 5.5, which it said cuts operating costs by about 40 percent versus Opus 5.
