Microsoft unveils Project Solara AI agent OS, built on Android rather than Windows

Microsoft on June 2 unveiled a new operating system, Project Solara, tailored for AI agents at its annual Build 2026 developer conference in San Francisco. Project Solara is designed on Android rather than Windows and focuses on running AI agents across devices such as smart speakers, security badges and earbuds. Microsoft also showed two concept devices, including a desk concept with face-unlock access to AI agents. It also introduced a Surface RTX Spark Dev Box with an Nvidia RTX Spark chip and 128GB unified memory. CEO Satya Nadella said Windows AI APIs would expand to more PCs, supporting CPU, GPU and NPU.
