Big Techs step up AI M&A push, from chips to agents

Big Tech companies are increasingly acquiring AI startups across chips, large language models and applications. Nvidia is effectively buying Groq assets for $20 billion and is also in advanced talks to acquire AI21 Labs for up to $2 to $3 billion, after purchasing SchedMD. Meta has acquired Singapore AI startup Manus. SoftBank plans to buy DigitalBridge for $4.04 billion and has completed a $40 billion OpenAI investment. Apple, Naver Cloud and Korean startups also announced AI-related moves.

Nvidia in talks to buy LLM developer AI21 Labs after Grok AI chip

Nvidia is in advanced talks to acquire large language model startup AI21 Labs for up to $2 billion to $3 billion, SiliconANGLE reported on Dec. 31, citing Israeli outlet Calcalist. If completed, the deal would more than double AI21 Labs\' valuation from last year. Nvidia joined AI21 Labs\' investment round last year. AI21 Labs has about $50 million in annualised revenue and developed the open-source LLM Jamba, and offers paid software Maestro for building AI agents.
