Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev (블라드 테네프) has reacted to a memecoin-related post, drawing attention to the possibility of expanding its memecoin offerings.
On Sept. 1, blockchain media outlet U.Today reported that a community is interpreting Tenev’s reaction as a sign of Robinhood expanding its memecoin business.
The reaction began when an X user, Valu, shared a July post about a “Robinhood memecoin.” At the time, Valu proposed to followers the idea of launching a memecoin on Robinhood.
Timing also overlaps. Robinhood has gained momentum in its crypto business since launching Robinhood Chain, an Ethereum-compatible layer 2 network, in July. The network quickly became a key venue for speculative trading. Tenev also said in July that Robinhood Chain fits memecoins well. The remark suggests the chain’s uses may not be limited to simple asset tokenisation.
Chain metrics are also boosting market expectations. Arkham, an on-chain analytics firm, said Robinhood Chain recently outpaced Solana, Base and Ethereum in chain fee revenue. The market is watching whether Robinhood can link its chain and trading platform to expand memecoin distribution channels.
Robinhood already has a track record of listing memecoins. It listed Dogecoin (DOGE) on July 16, 2018, and added Shiba Inu (SHIB) on April 12, 2022. Its current U.S. crypto lineup also includes Pepe (PEPE), Bonk (BONK), Dogwifhat (WIF), Floki (FLOKI), Popcat (POPCAT), Moodeng (MOODENG), Peanut the Squirrel (PNUT), Cat in a Dogs World (MEW) and Pudgy Penguins (PENGU).
There has not yet been an official announcement from the company. The community remains at a stage of weighing the possibility by linking Tenev’s reaction, his previous remarks and the growth of Robinhood Chain. It remains to be seen whether Tenev will make a separate announcement and whether Robinhood will translate the chain’s growth into an expansion of memecoins.
