[DigitalToday reporter Chi-gyu Hwang] Tech journalist Alex Heath (알렉스 히스), a former deputy editor at The Verge, shared in his newsletter the results of his reporting on OpenAI.

Working with TIME, he stayed for 2 weeks at OpenAI's headquarters in San Francisco and met more than 20 executives, investors, customers and people at rival companies to write a cover story titled "Inside OpenAI's Reboot."

The most striking part is a next-generation model called Astra. In a closed-door demonstration for VIP customers in early August, OpenAI showed Astra coordinating multiple agents at the same time to solve a mathematical proof, handling desktop software very quickly, and creating slides and financial review materials.

According to him, Astra is designed to carry out work that lasts from several days to several weeks, remember revisions and collaborate with other agents or people. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman (샘 알트먼) said it would be "the first model to invent something truly meaningful."

There were also remarks about AGI. Altman said he thinks the company will have a system it could call "AGI" internally within this year. Chief research officer Mark Chen (마크 첸) said he believes they are 80 percent of the way to the target, and president Greg Brockman (그록 브록먼) said people may later remember this time as "when AGI was made."

There was progress in research automation as well. Chief scientist Jakub Pachocki (야쿠브 파초키) said Astra can implement experiment ideas directly into a codebase, run the experiments and produce results. He stressed it can also handle paper work that takes a human researcher a week. He added that it is not at the level of deciding the entire research direction on its own.

OpenAI is also pushing ahead with a reorganisation. Nick Turley (닉 털리), who has led ChatGPT from the beginning, will now take charge of industry-specific enterprise products. OpenAI has also restarted its robotics business. Altman said he ultimately plans to build humanoid robots, and said uses such as data centre construction or robots that build robots would come before personal robots.

The first hardware being made with Jony Ive (조니 아이브) is expected to come in a form that sits on a desk. Altman said he does not like glasses-type devices with cameras and lights because the other person could feel uncomfortable.

There is also discussion about whether to sell computing power to outside customers. CEO Altman said, "Not for now; we are short even on the computing we have now." OpenAI computing chief Uday Rudraraju (우다이 루다라주) said, "If we had more computing, last year's revenue would have been higher."
