Qualcomm unveiled core technologies for its next-generation Snapdragon flagship platform. Qualcomm on Tuesday introduced the next-generation Qualcomm Oryon CPU and said it reached 5 GHz, a first for a mobile CPU. The Oryon CPU also increased IPC, a measure of instructions per clock, raising perceived performance across apps, gaming, content creation and agentic AI, the company said.
Qualcomm applied a fully custom design approach, directly designing everything from the microarchitecture to the implementation method and the CPU subsystem. It stressed that this allowed fine adjustments of each element and organic tuning of the overall system, making 5 GHz possible even under the constraints of mobile chipsets.
It also considered cache. Cache affects IPC performance, and large-scale tasks use big working sets, such as when an AI agent makes plans and calls tools or when a game maintains a vast virtual world. If the CPU cannot secure the data it needs, processing is delayed. Qualcomm explained it addresses this by equipping each core with a large instruction cache and placing L2 cache inside the CPU complex.
Qualcomm also introduced a new cache architecture called Qualcomm Oryon FlexCache. The technology lets heterogeneous cores with different characteristics access the same cache pool and dynamically allocates cache depending on workload. Using it can keep large working sets in cache rather than sending them to system memory when workloads require, reducing performance degradation even when the work exceeds the cache capacity of individual cores, the company said.
The FlexCache is used in agentic AI, gaming, multitasking and video editing. Even when an AI agent moves across multiple cores to perform tasks, it can maintain data sets using the same cache. In video editing, frames can be passed within cache without going through the interconnect during decoding, applying effects and exporting.
In smartphones equipped with the next-generation Snapdragon platform, the company explained that performance combining the 5 GHz Oryon CPU and FlexCache makes it possible to handle multi-stage workloads across the CPU.
Qualcomm is set to sequentially unveil CPU, GPU and NPU-related technologies ahead of Snapdragon Summit 2026.
