X, formerly Twitter, led by Elon Musk, is preparing to add a trading button that would allow users to buy and sell cryptocurrencies directly from a post screen.

On Aug. 26, Coinpost, a blockchain media outlet, reported the feature is part of X’s push to expand its crypto-related functions.

The new trading button would link directly from a post to cryptocurrency buying and selling. Nikita Bier (니키타 비어), who served as X’s chief product officer from mid-2025 through the second half of that year and stepped back into an advisory role in August this year, mentioned the development status. The feature is still at a pre-deployment stage.

The feature is seen largely as a successor to the smart cashtag that Bier led. The smart cashtag was X’s first major crypto function, allowing users to specify tokens such as Solana or Ethereum in posts using ticker symbols or smart contract addresses. When users enter a label such as "$ETH" or an address, the asset can be identified, and tapping the tag shows real-time prices, charts and related posts.

X previewed the smart cashtag in January and in mid-April first rolled out real-time price and chart displays and smart contract address-based matching for iPhone users. Later that month, it expanded support to the web version. Users can check asset information in posts and move more quickly to a trading step.

During his tenure, Bier expanded crypto features while also working to block spam content. He focused in particular on responding to so-called "infofi"-type apps that spread low-quality AI-generated crypto content by exploiting post reward structures. X has previously announced developer policy revisions, including API access limits, to improve information quality. Building an exchange-connection function was not a core task, but work related to the trading button is continuing in August.

As a result, X’s crypto features appear to be moving beyond price checks and asset tagging toward linking to actual trading. So far, confirmed details are limited to plans to add the trading button and the development status. It has not disclosed how exchange connections would be made or how far it would expand the cryptocurrencies supported.

X’s push for a trading button is being read as part of a move to expand its crypto functions from price checks and tags into actual trading. Its parallel work on smart cashtags and spam countermeasures is also drawing attention as a sign that feature expansion and information-quality management proceeded at the same time.
