Axios reported on Aug. 17 that Google-developed AI agent communication standard A2A (Agent2Agent Protocol) will be transferred to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF).

A2A is a communications specification that allows AI agents operating independently to exchange information and collaborate. Model Context Protocol (MCP), led by Anthropic, standardises how AI applications connect to external tools and data.

Axios said managing A2A under the same foundation as MCP could help the broader industry move toward modular AI systems not tied to specific models.

AAIF has grown to more than 250 member companies from fewer than 40 when it launched in December last year. Key participants include Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Anthropic, OpenAI, Bloomberg, Shopify and Block.

AAIF Executive Director Marjin Gilbert (마진 길버트) stressed that moving A2A to AAIF would provide a neutral space to develop open communication methods between AI agents.
