Apple has classified the iPhone X and the 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro as obsolete products.

According to IT outlet 9to5Mac on Aug. 13 local time, the move excludes the two products from Apple’s official hardware repair coverage and prevents service providers from ordering parts.

Apple updated its support document, “Get service for your Apple product after your warranty expires,” and classified the two products as obsolete rather than vintage. Apple says that once a product is placed on the obsolete list it stops all hardware service, and service providers can no longer order parts.

Apple can classify products as obsolete 7 years after sales distribution ends. The final designation timing is decided by Apple.

Vintage products have different classification standards from obsolete products. Apple classifies products as vintage when more than 5 years but less than 7 years have passed since sales and distribution ended. At this stage, repairs are supported only if parts inventory remains. This change means the two products have moved past the vintage stage and are classified as fully obsolete products.

Software support is also already effectively being wrapped up. The iPhone X was excluded from major operating system support starting with iOS 17, making iOS 16 its last update. The latest version currently available for the model is iOS 16.7.16.

The 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro also has limited support for the latest macOS. The model supports only up to macOS Sequoia, and the version currently available is macOS 15.7.7. With the end of hardware service overlapping with operating system support limits, official support for the two products is effectively concluded.

The change also serves as an example that reaffirms Apple’s standards for managing product lifecycles. Users therefore need to check both whether official repairs are available and the scope of operating system support.

Apple also separately provides for cases in which service is extended for up to 10 years for some products. The iPhone X and the 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro moved to the obsolete list this time are included, under the basic principle, among products for which official parts procurement and hardware repair support are discontinued.
