[DigitalToday reporter Jinju Hong (홍진주)] Dutch cargo bicycle maker Urban Arrow has launched its first longtail cargo electric bicycle, the Breeze, in the North American market. Urban Arrow, which has grown around front-load cargo bikes, is expanding its lineup in the United States and Canada to target the family cargo e-bike market.
On Aug. 13, local time, electric vehicle outlet Electrek reported that Urban Arrow recently began selling the Breeze through some dealers in the United States and Canada. Prices start at $6,999, and it is sold in North America in a single green color.
The Breeze expands Urban Arrow’s family cargo bike business built over 14 years into the longtail segment. Longtail cargo bikes offer a riding feel similar to regular bicycles, lowering the barrier to entry, and can carry children and cargo together, driving expanding demand in the North American market.
One of the Breeze’s biggest features is its 24-inch wheels. Instead of the 20-inch rear wheel commonly used on longtail cargo bikes, it uses larger wheels to deliver steering closer to a regular bicycle. Urban Arrow explained that stable riding is possible even at high speeds or when carrying passengers.
Its drivetrain combines a Bosch Cargo Line motor, an Enviolo continuously variable hub and a Gates carbon belt drive. It uses a belt drive instead of a chain to reduce maintenance burden and focuses on providing a smooth ride.
Its carrying capacity also targets family use. The rear rack can carry up to 80 kg, allowing two children or a passenger and cargo to ride together, and the bicycle’s total load limit is 200 kg. The frame is designed with a low step-through structure to make getting on and off easier even with heavy cargo loaded.
Convenience and safety specifications have also been strengthened. It comes standard with a dual-leg kickstand, a Bosch Purion 200 display, security features, and front and rear MIK HD accessory mounting systems. In particular, it provides accessories worth more than $700, including a passenger protective bar and footrests, a seat cushion and a front rack. This differentiates it from competing products that sell such equipment as separate options.
The Breeze is priced at $6,999, placing it among premium cargo e-bikes. Urban Arrow first introduced the Breeze in the European market last year, and launched it in North America in a single green color in consideration of market conditions.
The Breeze launch is also seen as reflecting a change in Urban Arrow’s North America strategy. By adding a longtail product after focusing on front-load cargo bikes, the company can also target consumers who prefer a riding feel similar to regular bicycles. It appears to have expanded its lineup to target North American family demand for handling school runs and grocery shopping by bicycle instead of by car.
