[DigitalToday reporter Jinju Hong (홍진주)] There is speculation that Sony is preparing a new model based on the discontinued flagship WH-1000XM4 headphones.

According to IT media outlet Engadget on Aug. 7 local time, Sony may release a new product named WH-1000XM4C for about $250, or about 350,000 won.

The model being discussed is expected to have little difference from the WH-1000XM4 released in 2020. Leaked information suggests the changes will be limited to battery life and colours. The folding design, 40 mm driver and noise-cancelling processor are reported to carry over the existing XM4 specifications.

Battery life may be slightly reduced. The new model is said to offer up to 34 hours with active noise cancelling turned off and up to 27 hours with it turned on. The 2020 XM4 was listed at 38 hours and 30 hours, respectively, so the new product may be slightly lower. Colours are said to include a new lavender option in addition to black and platinum silver.

A launch timing was also mentioned. A leaker who disclosed the information claimed Sony will release the XM4C on Sept. 7. The European price was put at 250 euros, and the UK price at around 220 pounds. The leaker was introduced as having correctly predicted the 2024 PS5 Pro announcement.

Attention is focused on how the product relates to Sony's current headphone pricing strategy. The WH-1000XM6 currently sells for $460 in the United States, or about 650,000 won, and 470 euros in the European Union. With the XM4C being discussed as possibly costing $240 to $250, it is interpreted as targeting a price tier one step below the latest flagship.

Its position in Sony's lineup could be somewhat ambiguous. That is because the previous-generation WH-1000XM5 can fall to around $250 when discounted. Under that structure, consumers could see the XM4C and XM5 competing directly. The outlet noted that in that case, "it would of course be better to choose the XM5."

If the product is actually released, it could be a sign that a strategy of lowering prices by reusing parts and designs could take hold in the premium audio market as well. As prices for top-end models have been rising, the speculation suggests Sony may respond by refurbishing a former flagship product and reintroducing it in the mid-price range.

For now, the details are based on leaked information rather than an official announcement. Engadget also said the speculation should be treated cautiously. It appears that Sony's official disclosure will need to be confirmed before the actual launch, final specifications and regional pricing are set.
