Hana Bank used its in-house abnormal financial transaction detection system (FDS) to block transactions linked to a new type of investment scam and prevented losses in 1,450 cases worth about 18.5 billion won.
Hana Bank said on Monday it developed and applied FDS monitoring scenarios reflecting the recently spreading 'KReSIM' investment scam pattern and implemented related financial fraud prevention measures.
According to Hana Bank, the KReSIM investment scam works by an eSIM seller recruiting investors by promoting an eSIM sales business for foreign tourists and promising high returns and multi-level commissions, then stopping profit settlements and disappearing.
Hana Bank introduced a dedicated monitoring scenario in February by incorporating the related scam pattern into its FDS. If a transaction signal is detected heading to corporate accounts linked to KReSIM, it rejects transaction approvals and blocks mobile banking app installation and login procedures to prevent further fund outflows.
It also sends emergency alert messages via KakaoTalk and provides one-on-one phone consultations with dedicated staff to warn of financial fraud risks. If necessary, it also provides guidance on procedures for reporting to the police.
The company said it has blocked a total of 1,450 related transactions worth about 18.5 billion won since introducing the scenario in February. It said it plans to continue improving FDS detection scenarios and to promote the training of specialist personnel in line with changes in financial fraud methods.
An official at Hana Bank's Financial Consumer Protection Department said, "We will continue to promote the training of specialist personnel and the advancement of the abnormal financial transaction detection system to strengthen our capabilities to prevent financial fraud losses."
