South Korea's Kosdaq surged more than 5 percent in intraday trading, triggering a buy sidecar for a third consecutive session.
The Korea Exchange said a sidecar, which temporarily suspends the effectiveness of program buy orders, was activated on the Kosdaq market at 10:47:51 a.m. on Tuesday.
At the time of the activation, the Kosdaq was up 38.99 points, or 5.29 percent, from the previous session at 776.34.
At the same time, the KOSPI was up 11.94 points, or 0.19 percent, from the previous session at 6,269.39, showing relatively limited gains compared with the Kosdaq.
The Kosdaq buy sidecar has been triggered for three straight sessions since July 31.
When the sidecar was triggered at 9:06:03 a.m. on July 31, the Kosdaq was up 42.99 points, or 6.67 percent, from the previous session at 687.77. The KOSPI also surged 13.53 percent at the time.
On Aug. 3, a buy sidecar was also triggered with the Kosdaq up 21.53 points, or 2.99 percent, from the previous session at 741.29 at 10:28:08 a.m. It was lifted at 10:33:08 a.m.
Through Tuesday, the Kosdaq sidecar has been triggered during an index rise in each of the past three sessions, showing an opposite flow from late last month when steep declines continued.
A sidecar is a system that suspends program buy or sell orders for 5 minutes to prevent program trading from amplifying market volatility when futures and spot prices surge or plunge beyond a certain level.
