Telegram will introduce its own non-custodial 'Gram' cryptocurrency wallet in its messenger app this summer. Cointelegraph reported on Monday that the wallet is designed to let more than 1 billion Telegram users send and receive self-custodied cryptocurrencies directly inside the app.
Telegram founder Pavel Durov (파벨 두로프) revealed the plan for the new wallet and said users will be able to send cryptocurrencies instantly and without fees using it. Telegram did not disclose an exact release date or additional technical details.
Durov described the launch as the biggest rollout of a non-custodial cryptocurrency wallet in human history. Telegram has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users in 2025, by the company’s count. That could significantly broaden access to self-custodied cryptocurrency use and person-to-person remittances, even if actual use is limited to some users.
The announcement follows TON, a blockchain closely linked to Telegram, saying weeks earlier it would change its token name from Toncoin to Gram. Gram is the original name Telegram used in a 2018 white paper. Durov described it as returning to the project’s roots.
