Cardano developer Input Output will hand over control of core blockchain infrastructure to external teams.

The move is part of Cardano's push for decentralisation. It covers the Haskell node, the Plutus smart-contract platform, the Daedalus wallet, Hydra scaling technology and developer relations work.

According to a CoinDesk report, SevenLabs, a developer specialising in Solana blockchain infrastructure, and TeraGon, which leads development of Cardano's stake-based signature protocol Mithril, will each take on development of some elements. The transfer starts in August and continues through 2027.

Cardano has already transferred protocol decisions and governance to the community. Input Output said the next step is distributing responsibility for software development and maintenance.

Charles Hoskinson (찰스 호스킨슨), CEO of Input Output and founder of Cardano, said, "The final stage of the Voltaire era is full decentralisation of node and reference blueprint development." The Voltaire era is the stage in Cardano's development roadmap in which governance, or decision-making authority, is transferred to the community.

Under a plan set out by Input Output, independent teams will maintain at least 3 Cardano implementations written separately in Haskell, Rust and Go. Member organisations such as Intersect and Pragma will oversee the official specifications, and development will be subject to community review and voting. Input Output will focus more on research and new business.

The announcement comes as Cardano experiences weak network activity. Cardano's total value locked is $70 million, compared with more than $4 billion each for Tron and Solana.

The value of its native token has also plunged. ADA traded at about 16 cents on Friday, down nearly 95 percent from a record high of $3.10 in September 2021.
