Naver Webtoon is introducing a creation tool that lets users produce short-form animations using official webtoon intellectual property approved by original creators.

On June 24, Naver Webtoon said it launched Cutsmake, an app dedicated to secondary creations that links to its short-form animation service Cuts. Users can select scenes and characters from webtoons within the app to make videos. All IP is provided after obtaining the original creator's consent, allowing users to enjoy their creations without concerns about copyright infringement.

Cutsmake has 2 main features: Character Meme and Webtoon Music Video (MV). Character Meme lets users combine selected characters and templates to make challenge-style short-form animations. Webtoon MV turns webtoon panels into vivid videos, enabling direction similar to a music video or an animation opening.

With the launch, 9 popular webtoons with strong fandoms have confirmed participation first, including Garbage Time, Dating App Addiction, The Greatest Estate Designer, Love Revolution, Job Change Log, Jakdu, Operation: Pure Love, Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint and Hashtag Is First Love. Naver Webtoon plans to continue expanding participating IP based on fandom demand.

The author 232 of the webtoon Love Revolution expressed expectations, calling it "a fun and groundbreaking app in that you can create various sides of your favorite character."

The app's basic functions are provided for free, but some features, including premium templates, cut editing and fast generation, are paid. Completed videos can be uploaded immediately to the short animation service Cuts. Export and download functions are also supported through a dedicated screen.

Hyo-jung Kim (김효정), head of business for Naver Webtoon's Cuts, said, "Webtoon fans will experience the joy of new creation through Cutsmake, and this will create a virtuous cycle that leads back to strengthening the fandom of the original works." She added, "We will expand the short animation ecosystem by adding more synergy between Cuts and webtoons."

Cutsmake is currently available for download on Google Play. It is expected to be launched next week on Apple's App Store once the review is completed.
