Coinbase-backed Ethereum layer-2 network Base has deployed its second upgrade, Beryl, to the Base Sepolia testnet, The Block reported on June 19 local time.
Mainnet activation is scheduled for June 25.
The Base engineering team said Beryl introduces B20, a native token standard that enables direct issuance of assets such as stablecoins within node software.
Standard withdrawal latency to Ethereum will also be reduced to 5 days from 7 days.
"B20 follows the ERC-20 standard as is, and also supports the ERC-2612 permit feature, which allows spending authority to be transferred with a signature alone without a separate transaction. Existing ERC-20 wallets, exchanges and indexers can be used as they are without modification.
The Block said B20 executes logic written in the Rust language directly by embedding it in node software in advance, making processing faster than typical smart contracts.
Base said its upgrade pace has accelerated since it moved in February away from a dependency structure based on sharing Optimism's OP Stack and shifted to its own integrated technology stack. The next upgrade, Cobalt, is scheduled for September. Base plans to introduce native account abstraction and an integrated node binary in the Cobalt upgrade."
