The government will donate, free of charge, vehicle-based mobile radio measurement systems that have exceeded their service life so they can be reused for education and research.
The Central Radio Management Office under the Ministry of Science and ICT held a handover ceremony on Tuesday, donating one vehicle-based mobile radio measurement system each to the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and the Korea Radio Promotion Association (RAPA).
The systems being donated were built by converting 15-seat minibuses in 2009 and 2010. The vehicles are equipped with directional and omnidirectional antennas, measurement receivers and operating PCs, enabling radio measurement and direction finding.
The vehicles were used for radio measurement and interference investigations at the Gwangju Radio Management Office and the Daejeon Radio Management Office until late last year. They were later classified as idle assets after exceeding their service life and struggling to meet new demand for radio measurement.
After reviewing reuse options, the Central Radio Management Office decided to donate the equipment after receiving requests from KAIST and the Korea Radio Promotion Association to use it for public-interest purposes such as education, research and radio measurement. Recipient institutions are not allowed to sell the equipment or donate it again to another institution.
Choi Jun-ho (최준호), head of the Central Radio Management Office, said it will continue to consider additional free donations if there is demand from public institutions and will continue cooperation to create a safe and convenient radio environment.
