Apple has released iOS 26.6 developer beta 2 for the iPhone, continuing preparations for the next interim update.
According to IT outlet NineToFiveMac on June 15 local time, the version is a follow-up test build after the first developer beta and public beta unveiled in May.
Two changes have been confirmed so far in this beta. One is a change related to limits on the number of contacts users can block. The other is that a new anti-theft feature for iPhones is being developed. Apple has not yet broadly disclosed detailed features, so the scope reflected in the final release requires further confirmation.
The scale of added features is unlikely to be large. That is because Apple’s main focus for pre-release software has already shifted to iOS 27. Changes confirmed in iOS 26.6 related to this update are limited, and a larger expansion in new features and functionality is not expected.
Apple’s schedule also supports this 흐름. Apple plans to keep refining iOS 27 this summer, then roll out the next major software update to general users in September. As a result, iOS 26.6 will serve as the next official release for iPhones until the large fall update.
iOS 26.6 is an extension of the iOS 26 series of updates that has continued since last fall. Apple has sequentially released follow-up versions since the launch of iOS 26, and 26.6 is an interim update that continues that 흐름. For users, it can be seen as closer to supplementing the existing version and adjusting some features than to a sweeping overhaul.
The timing of this beta release also stands out. Last year, iOS 18.6 beta 1 came after iOS 26 beta 1, but this year iOS 26.6 is proceeding on a somewhat accelerated schedule compared with the 2025 release cycle. It is read as a sign that Apple is moving more quickly to stabilise the current operating system before fall.
Market and developer attention has already shifted to iOS 27, but iOS 26.6 is meaningful in that it will reach actual users first. In particular, changes that touch daily use and security, such as adjustments to blocked contacts limits and an anti-theft feature, could be highly noticeable in the final release.
Two points will be watched going forward. One is whether Apple will add features beyond the two changes confirmed so far in subsequent betas. The other is how far the new anti-theft feature will be fleshed out. As Apple focuses on developing iOS 27 this summer, expectations tilt toward iOS 26.6 being officially released with necessary improvements rather than a major overhaul.
