LG Display said on May 28 it became the first in the world to commercialise a 240Hz RGB stripe OLED panel. The structure aligns red, green and blue (RGB) subpixels in a row, delivering clearer text and numbers than existing OLED. It reduces eye strain in work settings that require long screen use, such as document work, stock and financial trading, coding and content editing. The company said this mass production marks a world first from development through commercialisation.

The result comes as OLED expands its presence in the premium monitor market. Demand is rising rapidly for displays that support both clear text and high image quality as multitasking and high-resolution work increase alongside wider adoption of AI PCs. LG Display aims to use the new panel to accelerate a shift to OLED in the high-end monitor market previously dominated by premium LCD.

The panel combines the RGB stripe structure with 160 PPI high resolution and a 240Hz high refresh rate. PPI (pixels per inch) refers to the number of pixels within 1 inch, with higher figures enabling more precise text and image rendering. LG Display said it is the first time a pixel density at the 160 PPI level has been achieved with an RGB stripe structure. The company said the design supports both office work and gaming with a single panel.

It also applies DFR (Dynamic Frequency & Resolution) technology, allowing users to choose between a high-resolution mode (4K, 240Hz) and a high refresh rate mode (FHD, 480Hz). The high-resolution mode is suitable for photo and video editing or multitasking, while the high refresh rate mode reduces ghosting and stutter when playing FPS games or watching sports broadcasts. Users can freely switch between the two modes depending on their environment.

The company plans to work with major global monitor brands to expand its lineup in stages, starting with mass production of 27-inch panels. It aims to raise OLED's share in the high-end monitor market centred on premium LCD.

Lee Hyun-woo (이현우), head of the Large Display Business Division, said, "The world's first commercialisation of 240Hz RGB stripe OLED proves the potential as a culmination of OLED technology." He added, "Based on technology leadership and business competitiveness, we will accelerate OLED expansion within the monitor market and lead the premium market."
