Cloud computing and security company Akamai has agreed to acquire AI and browser security specialist LayerX for about $205 million, SecurityWeek reported on May 14 local time.

According to the report, LayerX developed a security platform that monitors and controls user and AI agent activity in real time across browsers, applications and integrated development environments (IDEs).

LayerX's solution supports responses to AI-related risks, including shadow AI detection, prevention of generative AI data leaks, access control for AI tools, detection of misuse and abuse, and protection for AI browsers and plugins.

It also provides existing browser security functions, including browser extension management, safe web browsing and secure access.

With LayerX technology, Akamai will add capabilities to control AI use to its zero-trust and application security portfolio. Akamai previously acquired serverless WebAssembly company Fermyon in December 2025.
