The Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) said on Thursday it awarded an AI reliability certification (CAT) to the 'AI governance' system built by the Gyeonggi provincial government.

It is the first certification case in South Korea in the AI governance category under TTA's CAT programme. It applied ISO/IEC 38507:2022, an international standard on an organisation's adoption and use of AI, as the review criteria.

The Gyeonggi provincial government's AI governance aims to secure administrative efficiency and expand inclusive services for residents. With the provincial governor as the final person responsible, it established an AI governance system that introduces and operates AI across administration and public-facing services, including the Gyeonggi AI Committee (review and advisory), the AI Bureau (overall management and coordination) and individual offices and bureaus (execution and application).

TTA said it conducted a detailed evaluation of the provincial government's AI governance system, focusing on trust-related aspects such as AI ethics and safety. It assessed five core areas: decision-making, data use, organisational culture and values, regulatory compliance and risk management.

TTA Chairman Seung-hyun Son (손승현) said ensuring the reliability of governance systems that manage and oversee AI technology has become key to public trust. He said TTA would spare no support so that public institutions and companies in South Korea can build AI management systems that meet international standards.
