[DigitalToday reporter Jinju Hong (홍진주)] Retro video game brand Plaion Replai is working with publisher SNK to launch the Neo Geo AES+, a follow-up model to the Neo Geo AES, known as a high-end console in the 1990s, on Nov. 12. The console keeps the original design and feel while adding features tailored to modern display environments.
TechRadar reported on April 16 that the Neo Geo AES+ implements a redesigned application-specific integrated circuit chip rather than the software emulation commonly used in the reissue console market. Plaion Replai explained, "We focused on delivering a play experience as close to the original as possible."
The Neo Geo AES was a premium console aimed at hardcore gamers, priced at $649.99 when it launched in the 1990s. It was among the top performers of its era, but its high price limited broader adoption. The outlet assessed that its status at the time was similar to today's PlayStation 5 Pro.
The new model maintains that identity while significantly lowering the barrier to entry. The Neo Geo AES+ is priced at $249.99 (179.99 pounds, 329.99 Australian dollars). The strategy focuses less on a high-end image and more on preserving the original form and improving everyday usability.
The feature set also changes. It adds HDMI output to improve compatibility with modern TVs, while retaining AV output to accommodate CRT display users. It also supports an overclock mode, language selection and score saving via a memory card.
The console launch will be accompanied by re-releases of flagship game titles. Metal Slug, The King of Fighters 2002 and Garou: Mark of the Wolves will go back on sale, with each title set at a relatively high price. The company emphasized, however, that they are cheaper than the cost of finding used original cartridges.
The re-released games will also run on existing Neo Geo AES consoles, reflecting consideration for the existing user base. Classic titles such as Twinkle Star Sprites will also be brought to market.
The industry is offering assessments that the product is a strategic attempt to combine preservation of the original form, compatibility and modern usability, going beyond a simple nostalgia item. Attention is on how the Neo Geo AES, which previously remained centered on enthusiasts because of its high price, will be received in the reissue console market on the back of a lower price and an expanded usage environment.
