Anthropic has been designated a supply-chain risk by the U.S. Defense Department, and major cloud providers have confirmed they will continue offering Anthropic AI models, excluding Defense Department work.
After Microsoft and Google, Amazon Web Services (AWS) said it will continue providing Anthropic Claude to cloud customers, excluding Defense Department work.
An AWS spokesperson said, "Claude can continue to be used for all workloads unrelated to Defense Department work," adding, "We will support switching Defense Department-related work to alternative models running on AWS."
Amazon has invested $8 billion in Anthropic since 2023 and has maintained close cooperation in business as well.
Earlier, the Defense Department officially notified Anthropic on March 5 that it had been designated a supply-chain risk company. If the designation takes effect, suppliers and contractors that do business with the Defense Department must certify they do not use Anthropic models for Defense Department-related work. Anthropic has signalled legal action in response.
