OpenAI is seeking an additional $100 billion in funding at a valuation of $830 billion. In the process, Amazon is likely to invest at least $50 billion, TechCrunch reported on Jan. 29, citing the Wall Street Journal.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman are reported to be in direct negotiations. Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds, Nvidia, Microsoft and SoftBank are also participating in the investment talks. The negotiations are expected to be wrapped up within the first quarter.
If Amazon invests in OpenAI, changes are expected in its relationship with Anthropic, with which it has had close ties. Amazon Web Services has invested $8 billion in Anthropic and has served as a key cloud and model training partner.
