OpenAI has released a framework to measure the impact of ChatGPT use on long-term learning ability, Axios reported on Tuesday.
Axios said concerns that AI chatbots reduce human thinking ability have existed for some time, but there is still no research tracking AI’s long-term impact.
OpenAI’s Learning Outcomes Measurement Suite is designed to help fill that gap. It tracks how AI use affects learners’ persistence, motivation and creative problem-solving ability. It also monitors model behaviour, learner interaction patterns and changes in cognitive ability over time.
OpenAI plans to distribute the tool to schools and universities after large-scale validation studies.
Axios reported that releasing the measurement tool shows a responsible stance, but until results from long-term studies are available, both teachers and students still find it difficult to be certain whether AI helps or harms learning.
