U.S. President Donald Trump ordered federal government agencies to immediately stop using Anthropic AI, The Verge reported on Feb. 27 local time. The move followed Anthropic's refusal of U.S. Defense Department demands for AI use. Anthropic's effort to limit the U.S. military's use of AI led to conflict with the government, The Verge said.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei (다리오 아모데이) opposed the Defense Department's demands, saying they could undermine democratic values. Trump strongly criticised Anthropic, saying it hindered military strategy and threatened national security. Under Trump's order, federal agencies must come up with a plan within 6 months to replace Anthropic AI, The Verge said.
OpenAI and xAI are currently working with the Defense Department, and OpenAI is negotiating in a way that puts some restrictions in place. Anthropic, by contrast, is sticking to conditions that limit military use of AI, leaving talks with the Defense Department at an impasse, The Verge said.
