Anthropic held a total of $131.7 billion in cash and short-term investment assets as of end-June, the company showed. Among U.S. non-financial companies, it was the largest sum excluding Berkshire Hathaway and Alphabet.

CNBC reported on Oct. 27 that Anthropic said in an initial public offering filing submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that it held $112.4 billion in cash and $19.3 billion in short-term investment assets as of June 30. That tops the cash holdings of Amazon, SpaceX, Meta and Microsoft, and exceeds the combined cash holdings of Nvidia and Apple.

Its holdings could rise further depending on the amount raised through the IPO. The market is also discussing the possibility that Anthropic's offering could exceed $100.0 billion. Existing investors also plan to sell stakes in the listing, meaning not all proceeds would flow into the company. Details such as the size of the offering are expected to be disclosed in about two weeks.

Anthropic has raised a total of $141.0 billion through private investment over about six years since its founding. Despite its large cash holdings, it still faces a considerable spending burden to secure computing resources. The company said it spent $8.95 billion on computing and infrastructure costs in the first half.

Anthropic typically secures computing resources 12 to 18 months before actual use, and recognises costs when it becomes able to use that capacity. As a result, first-half costs alone make it difficult to fully gauge future spending burdens.

As of June 30, Anthropic's expected lease obligations before discounts were tallied at $321.4 billion, and future fixed or minimum guaranteed payment commitments were calculated at $265.6 billion. Combined, the two items total $587.0 billion. The contracts are set to begin performance within the next few years, and run for 1 to 20 years.

Anthropic also said it would take on an additional roughly $245.0 billion in minimum payment obligations from contracts newly signed or amended after June 30. The company has not yet disclosed the total size of commitments under its latest 기준.

Anthropic's large cash pile shows its ability to raise funds to secure large-scale computing resources early. At the same time, spending obligations tied to securing those resources are also growing, making future fundraising and revenue generation key variables.
