[Digital Today reporter Seungah Yoo] Elon Musk (일론 머스크), CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, suggested SpaceX could reach $1 trillion in revenue in 2028. The market has also produced skepticism that it is achievable.
On Oct. 21 (local time), Business Insider reported that Musk wrote on X, formerly Twitter, "As crazy as this sounds, $1T in SpaceX revenue in 2028 is no longer impossible."
The outlook is more aggressive than the previous target. Musk said in August that SpaceX internally expects $1 trillion in revenue in 2030, and mentioned that the possibility of achieving it in 2029 was "not zero." This time, he effectively brought the target forward by 1 year.
Musk also said at SpaceX's third-quarter earnings briefing the same day that annual recurring revenue could reach $500 billion to $1 trillion by the end of 2027. JPMorgan, by contrast, projected SpaceX's 2027 revenue at $254 billion after the results announcement.
Recent results show rapid growth. SpaceX said last quarter's revenue came close to $15 billion. That was up 161 percent from a year earlier. Full-year revenue in 2025 came in slightly below $19 billion. To reach $1 trillion in revenue in 2028, it would need to increase revenue about 53-fold in 3 years.
The key driver of growth was the superintelligence segment. Revenue in that segment surged 830 percent to $7.6 billion from about $800 million. SpaceX cited new cloud service contracts, about $600 million in revenue generated by Cursor, which it recently acquired, and broader adoption of Grok by corporate clients as key factors.
The scale of the target stands out even compared with major global companies. Last year, Amazon and Walmart each posted net sales slightly above $700 billion. If SpaceX reaches $1 trillion in revenue in 2028, it would post results more than 40 percent higher than the two companies' revenue last year.
The market, however, produced a skeptical assessment. Neil Wilson (닐 윌슨), a UK investment strategist at Saxo Bank, called SpaceX's $1 trillion revenue forecast for 2028 an "overreaching target." He said demand would need to rise sharply over a short period to achieve it, making it hard to trust. He did not rule out reaching $1 trillion in revenue, but assessed there was no chance it would be realised by 2028.
Musk also said Tesla and SpaceX have formed a committee to review the possibility of a merger. It is not clear, however, whether the revenue forecast he presented includes Tesla's results. Tesla's revenue last year was about $95 billion.
