Charles Hoskinson (찰스 호스킨슨), founder of Cardano, said he is personally developing a new programming language for the blockchain.
On Oct. 18, local time, blockchain outlet U.Today reported that the new language is designed to process intents and proof-carrying data (PCD) with Groth16 proofs.
Hoskinson disclosed the development while answering a community question about what differentiation Cardano can offer based on high decentralisation. "I am personally developing a programming language for Cardano," he said. He described it as "the first language to implement intents and PCD with Groth16 proofs."
He did not disclose the new language's name, detailed specifications or release schedule.
Ahead of the announcement, Hoskinson also previewed new ways to use Midnight, a partner blockchain of Cardano that focuses on privacy protection. "I am devising a concept that can solve most problems in the cryptocurrency industry," he said. "It will be the defining work of my career." It has not been confirmed whether the two projects are linked.
Charles Hoskinson has also expressed views several times on programming language choices. He has preferred Haskell, which was used in Cardano's early development, and in June 2022 he suggested using Haskell after Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey discussed the merits of programming languages.
He later acknowledged he was not confident about the decision to choose Haskell. In May 2024, he said he nearly chose Clojure, and cited the ability to use technologies such as Cloud Haskell, Liquid Haskell and Agda as reasons for ultimately selecting Haskell. In an April 2025 interview, he said he would be likely to choose a different programming language if he were to develop Cardano again from scratch.
Cardano currently supports smart contract languages such as Plutus and Aiken, which are based on Haskell. Midnight uses a programming language called Compact that focuses on privacy protection. With the new language's specific functions and release schedule still undisclosed, how it will differ from existing development environments will need to be confirmed through detailed specifications released later.
